Smart VMD Virtual Mobile Datacenter

Portal-Based Collaborative Suite for Critical Mission Planning and Execution
The Smart Virtual Mobile Datacenter (VMD) is a highly scalable, mobile, and redundant network and information architecture designed specifically for supporting collaborative requirements under tactical and austere conditions.

A baseline Smart VMD incorporates Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS), SQL Server, Exchange, Outlook Web Access, IIS, File and Print Services, CITRIX Presentation Server, Symantec Antivirus, Adobe Connect, Jabber XCP, Backup Exec, and Altiris Server Management all hosted within a VMware virtualized infrastructure. Other critical applications can also be hosted or serviced via the Smart VMD.

The Smart VMD is packaged with complete electrical wiring and cabling fully integrated and labeled within the transport cases which allows for rapid setup, transportability, rugged durability, and protection.

Features & Advantages

Storage Area Network (SAN)
Smart VMD incorporates fiber channel or iSCSI SAN technologies, including 18TB of data, arrayed in redundant configurations (RAID) and hot spare hard drives significantly reducing single points of failure in storage.

Virtualization Technology
Smart VMD incorporates a virtualized server infrastructure which reduces typical hardware footprints by 75%, thus increasing the mobility and maintainability of the solution.

Four to one reduction in server footprint: 20 servers to 5

  • Increases Reliability
  • Reduces Weight
  • Reduces Maintenance
  • Reduces Wiring
  • Reduces Power
  • Reduces Space

In addition, the Virtualization Technology enables the consolidation of existing servers into “virtual machines (VMs)” which can be deployed across Smart VMD hardware, which is treated as a single pool of processing, storage, and networking power to be allocated and de-allocated on the fly to the various software services, as required in an automated, controlled and manageable process. VMs are completely isolated from the host machine and other virtual machines. If a virtual machine crashes, all others are unaffected. VM migration provides the capability for applications to be moved across processors and machine boundaries with zero disruption for service (server maintenance).

Replication, Backup, Redundancy, Simplified Management and User Friendliness
Smart VMD provides advanced replication services; disaster recovery capabilities; electrical, hardware and software based redundancy; simplified provisioning and management of applications (legacy client server applications can be run in a web only environment, reducing the administrative burden of installing and configuring applications on remote client machines), and the ability to employ Portal and “web” technologies for a simplified user interface and content management capability.

    Typical Hardware Components

    SIZE AND WEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS
A custom configured Smart VMD for one customer included:
Standard: Six (6) rugged cases with individual weights of 157 to 347 lbs.
Lite: Four (4) rugged cases occupying 80.4 cu. ft. with individual weights of 237 to 347 lbs.
    Fixed: Two Dell 42U racks each measuring 79" high x 24" wide x 40" deep, 1972 lbs.

    Tactical Employment Operations

Pairs of Standard and Lite suites are used in a deployed “jump” forward/displacement while simultaneously exercising C2 environment. The Fixed suite is used for rear continuity of operations, data analysis and test bedding.

  • Advanced Replication Capabilities
  • Differential compression replication and High/Low bandwidth replication throttling
  • Multi-master Exchange Services
