Panama President Visits Southern Maryland
Panama President Juan Carlos Varela and his delegation visit the AirTec
Engineering and Integration Facility to see first-hand the aircraft in
development under the Smartronix USSOUTHCOM contract. This highly capable
platform will be used for the region's C4ISR missions.
Hollywood, MD – (19 June 2019) – Mr. Tom
Jarboe, AirTec USSOUTHCOM Program Manager, brought together key project team
members, Government, and U.S. military representatives on 19 June to meet
with the Panamanian President and his delegation. The group shared progress in
modifying the Panamanian Beechcraft 350 twin-engine plane with advanced sensors,
avionics, and communications systems in support of the country's
counter-narcotics mission.
President Varela stressed this importance of this high-visibility project, not
only to his country but also to safety and security of the international
community. The capabilities of this aircraft will be game-changing, providing
Panama with an organic capability to conduct airborne counter-narcotics
surveillance and other security missions. Panama has tremendous terrain
diversity with jungles, mountains, deserts, and a vast maritime region, making
it challenging to track illicit activities across the varying topography. These
new airborne capabilities will be critical in countering the flow of narcotics
and contraband to the U.S. and other international partners.
